Hillel was born in Bavel during the time that the Jewish People were in exile there (after the destruction of the first Beit haMikdash).  Though he was from the famous family of King David, he was a very poor man.  He had to support himself through chopping wood.  As a young man, he went up to Yerushalayim and learned with Shamaya and Avtalyon.   As a Nasi for 40 years, his Sanhedrin was in the (Second) Beit haMikdash itself.  He served at the same time as Shamai the Elder.  He is most famous for his tremendous patience and humility.

A Story:

Shammai was asked, "Teach me the Torah while I stand on one foot."  He chased the person away.  The person then went to Hillel and said, "Teach me the Torah while I stand on one foot."  Hillel replied, "What is hateful to you, don't do to others.  All the rest is explanation.  Now, go and study!"
